we came abruptly to a halt broadside across the ro

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 20:55

I remember little of the journey there or the process of admission. Mulcaster, I think, protested vigorously and, when we were made to empty our pockets, accused his gaolers of theft. Then we were locked in, and my first clear memory is of tiled walls with a lamp set high up under thick glass, a bunk, and a door which had no handle on my side. Somewhere to the left of me Sebastian and Mulcaster were raising Cain.  Sebastian had been steady on his legs and fairly composed on the way to the station; now, shut in, he seemed in a frenzy and was pounding the door, and. shouting: ‘Damn you, I’m not drunk. Open this door. I insist on seeing the doctor. I tell you I’m not drunk,’ while Mulcaster, beyond, cried: ‘My God, you’ll pay for this! You’re making a great mistake, I can ‘tell you. Telephone the Home Secretary. Send for my solicitors. I will have habeas corpus.’ Groans of protest rose from the other cells where various tramps and pickpockets were trying to get some sleep: ‘Aw, pipe down!’ ‘Give a man some peace, can’t yer?’…’Is this a blinking lock-up or a looney-house?’ - and the sergeant, going his rounds, admonished them through the grille. ‘You’ll be here all night if you don’t sober up.’

‘I’m sorry if I am impeding the traffic, officer,’ said Sebastian with care, ‘but the lady insisted on my stopping for her to get out. She would take no denial. As you will have observed, she was pressed for time. A matter of nerves you know.’ ‘Let me talk to him, ‘ said Death’s Head. ‘Be a sport, handsome; no one’s seen anything but you. The boys don’t mean any harm. I’ll get them into a taxi and see them home quiet.’

"Did she tell you that?"

The policemen looked us over, deliberately, forming their own judgement. Even then everything might have been well had not Mulcaster joined in. ‘Look here, my good man,’ he said. ‘There’s no need for you to notice anything. We’ve just come from Ma Mayfield’s. I reckon she pays you a nice retainer to keep your eyes shut. Well, you can keep ‘em shut on us too, and you won’t be the losers by it.’ That resolved any doubts which the policemen may have felt. In a short time we were in the cells.

"She told Mel that. When she’d come over, he’d say ‘You’re so gorgeous, doll. Why no stud on your arm?’ Or something like that. She’d laugh and say she didn’t have time to waste on a man, and Mel would make cracks about if only he were two hundred years younger. . . . When If he figures out what happened, it’ll crush him."

Her nose began to run, and I handed her a tissue.

"Her work," said Milo.

"Modelingshe freelanced, saved up quite a bit of money. It allowed her to go back to school."

"No time for boyfriends," he said. "Not a single one."

"No one that I ever met." Her eyes shifted to the floor, and I knew she was holding back. Aware of Lauren’s real profession?

"Busy with her studies," said Milo."Yes. She loved her classes. Loved psychology, planned to go all the wayget a Ph.D." To me: "You inspired her. She thought you were great."

Milo said, "In addition to classes, did she do any psychological work?"

"You mean like volunteering? I don’t think so."

"Volunteering, research."

"No," said Jane. "Nothing that she mentioned."

"What about travel?"

10 Investments You Should Know

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 20:54

It’s impossible to miss the fact that stocks, real estate and bonds all make for decent investments (at least most of the time). But there are so many different investment options, most of which get minimal marketing. If you want to take a look at a wider variety of options, you should be able to at least tell an American Depository Receipt apart from a Convertible Security. There are about twenty investments that any investor should at least be familiar with and the ten listed below are the first half of that list.

1. American Depository Receipt (ADR)

ADRs are traded on U.S. stock markets just like regular stocks, but they actually represent shares in foreign corporations. An ADR is issued by a U.S.-based bank or brokerage, which buys a large number of shares from a company based outside the U.S. Those shares are bundled into groups and then resold; they are usually labeled with a ratio representing how many shares a particular ADR represents. The sponsoring bank collects detailed financial information about any company whose shares it resells. ADRs are a relatively simple way to invest in foreign companies and avoid the administrative and duty costs of international transactions. Other countries besides the U.S. have depository receipt opportunities available.

2. Annuity

Annuities provide set payments at regular intervals to their owners. You can typically purchase an annuity through an insurance company, and you’ll have several options. An annuity can either be immediate or deferred: with a deferred annuity, you will not begin receiving payments for a certain period of time. Deferred annuities are often contracted for life — they’re set up so that as long as you live, the insurance company will send you a check at a regular interval. Annuities are also either fixed (the payments are set) or variable (there is a guaranteed minimum payment, as well as payments based on the performance of an annuity investment portfolio.

3. Closed-End Investment Fund

A closed-end fund issues shares that are traded just like stocks but are actually closer to mutual funds in the way the are managed. Closed-end funds hold portfolios of securities — usually securities that meet very specific criteria (i.e. come from particular industries). These fund are actively managed and may hold a few investments in stocks or bonds in order to diversify, but because of their focus on particular sectors, closed-end fund issues are not considered diverse. Some closed-end funds offer dividends.

4. Collectibles

Collectibles can be pretty much any physical asset with a value that increases over time. While most people consider fine art, stamps and similar purchases to be collectibles, there is no strict definition that includes or excludes a particular asset. The greatest drawback to collectibles is the fact that collectibles offer no income, unlike many other investments. However, a collectible’s appreciating value often outpaces inflation.

5. Common Stock

Common stock is what most of us think of when we hear the word stock: a share of ownership in a particular company. It entitles you to a portion of the company’s profits as well as voting rights. The majority of stocks traded today are common stocks. While the benefits associated with owning stock can be great, it is a relatively risky investment. If a company that you own stock in goes bankrupt, as a common shareholder, you won’t receive money until the creditors, bondholders and preferred shareholders have all been paid off.

6. Convertible Security

Convertible securities are either preferred stock convertibles or convertible bonds. While you would purchase a convertible bond just as you would purchase a normal bond, you would have the opportunity to convert it into common stock in the company that issued it. Depending on the terms of the convertible bond, also known as the indenture, the bond could convert into a significant number of shares. Convertible bonds do provide a small amount of income, but the real value is that the bond can be converted into common stock.

7. Corporate Bond

Corporations issue bonds in order to raise money: when you buy a corporate bond, you’re essentially loaning a corporation money for the length of the bond. Not only will the corporation repay you the full face value of the bond (and your loan) but it will also pay you a coupon — a predetermined interest rate paid out every six months. Corporate bonds are more lucrative than government bonds, but they are also riskier.

8. Futures Contract

A futures contract is a commitment to either deliver or receive a specific quantity of a commodity during a specific month at a specific price. Most futures contract are closed out before the expected delivery date and while they can be very risky, futures contracts can also provide for a simple way to manage price risks. They can provide impressive profits, due to their higher risk factors.

9. Life Insurance

While life insurance may not seem like an investment on the surface, it provides a return on your monthly payments. No matter how long you may have been paying for a life insurance polity, its value is set. It’s a relatively low-risk investment because insurance is heavily regulated by the government.

10. The Money Market

Through the money market, you can buy fixed-income securities, primarily short-term securities that last less than a year. Unless you are able to deal in the very high denominations that most money market securities are sold in, you will likely have to purchase these securities through a money market mutual fund or bank account. Returns on money market investments are highly dependent on the current interest rate and are considered low risk.

双语美文赏析:品味当下

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 20:52

Tucked away in our subconsciousness is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent. We are traveling by train.Out the windows, we drink in the passing  scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat,of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls。

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so  many wonderful dreams will come true and the  pieces of our lives will fit together like a  completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering-waiting, waiting, waiting for the station。

"When we reach the station, that will be it!" we cry. "When I’m 18." "When I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz!""When I put the last kid through college.""When I have paid off the mortgage!" "When I get a promotion." "When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily  ever after!"

  "进站时,一切都好了!"我们呼喊着。"我满18岁时。""我买了一辆新的450SL奔驰轿车时!""当我供最小的孩子读完大学。""当我还了所有的贷款。""当我退休的时候,就从此过上了幸福的生活!"

Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us。

  迟早,我们会意识到人生没有终点站,没有什么地方真正完美。生命的真正乐趣在于旅行的过程。终点站只是一个梦,它永远在我们的前方。

"Relish the moment" is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118:24, "This is  the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." It isn’t the burdens  of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow.  Regret  and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today。

  "品味现在"本身就是一句很好的箴言,再加上《圣经?诗篇》第118章第24行的这样一句话,使得它更显特别:"主创造了今天,我们为活在今日而欢欣雀跃。"导致人们疯狂的往往不是今日的沉重,而是对昨日的懊悔和对明日的畏惧。懊悔和畏惧如同一对孪生的窃贼,偷走了我们的今天。

So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice creams, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.

Who Won $31 Million in Lottery Has Been Missing Si

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 20:52

In 2006, truck driver Abraham Shakespeare won $31 million in the Florida lottery. But like so many who win, his luck quickly turned to trouble.

A fellow trucker claimed the Lakeland, Florida man stole the winning ticket from his wallet while they were driving to Miami on their meat deliveries to restaurants. Shakespeare countered by saying he’d given Michael Ford money to buy the tickets when they stopped at a convenience store. It took a jury only two hours to agree with Shakespeare.

But with so much money — and so many friends and relatives trying to glom onto it — the life of a lottery winner is never that easy. In April, Shakespeare simply disappeared. And no one knows what to make of it…

The Polk County Sheriff’s office is offering a $5,000 reward for information on his whereabouts. But they don’t know if he’s a victim of foul play, or if he just took off to get away from the mooches.

"The fact that he’s been gone since April, no contact with family, and that Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone with no word from him, that’s a concern," spokeswoman Donna Wood told CNN.

"We have a man who certainly has the means, being a lottery winner, to take himself into seclusion. If that’s what he has chosen to do, no law says he can’t do that. If that’s the case, all we need is a phone call or some confirmation to verify his well-being. But we can’t take the chance that something else might have happened."

"Until we can verify his whereabouts, we consider him missing and potentially a victim of a crime."

At 6-foot-5 and just 190 pounds, it won’t be easy for Shakespeare to hide if that’s his intent. But with that kind of money, he could have also disappeared to the darkest corners of the world.

Then again, that same money could have brought out the darkness in someone else who wanted it.

Woman wins millions from Texas lottery for 4th tim

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 20:50

Once, twice, three times a Texas lottery millionaire — now it’s four.

Joan R. Ginther, a native of Bishop, Texas, made her fourth appearance Monday at lottery headquarters in Austin to collect seven figures, lottery officials said.

Ginther, 63, won $10 million, the top prize in Texas Lottery’s $140,000,000 Extreme Payout scratch-off ticket she bought for $50, pushing her total wins to $20.4 million.

It was her third time to win on a ticket from a Bishop store, and second one at the Times Market there.

"This is a very lucky store," said Bob Solis, store manager.

Store owner Sun Bae is the one with the lucky hand, Solis said. "Sun sold both the winning tickets to the woman."

The store, which sells about 1,000 lottery tickets daily, now is eligible to receive a bonus of $10,000 for the second time.

In 1993 Ginther first won a $5.4 million share of an $11 million Lotto Texas jackpot for a ticket bought in Bishop. She opted for annual payments of $270,000 (excluding tax charges) for 19 years. The cost of her lottery ticket could not be determined.

On year 13, while visiting Bishop to care for her father in 2006, Ginther won the top prize of $2 million in the Holiday Millionaire game thanks to a $30 scratch-off ticket.

Ginther requested a lump-sum payment of about $1.5 million, after the 25 percent taken by the commission for taxes.

In 2008, she collected a $3 million prize in Millions and Millions, another scratch-off, at the same Times Market where she won this week. That scratch-off ticket’s cost also was not reported.

Ginther, who now lives in Las Vegas, requested minimal publicity, according to the Texas lottery commission, and could not be reached Friday

Four Jobs Being Replaced by Robots

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 22:14

1.jpg

If the fear of losing your job to the recession hasn’t given you an ulcer, maybe this will: robots. Yes, robots, man’s modern invention that can work harder, better, faster, stronger, and—more importantly—cheaper. So, does that make technology a bad thing? How do we deal with this phenomenon, or for some of us, this ordeal? We’re only human, after all.

First, let’s take a look at five jobs under the gun.

1. Cashier/Checker
You’ve probably noticed the self-checkout stands at the grocery store beckoning you from the long line you’re standing in. Today, they cause more headache than help, since shoppers are still figuring out where to collect their receipts. But despite this minor setback, have you noticed that these lines actually move quicker, outperforming their flesh-and-blood compatriots? Okay, so maybe it’s because shoppers in them have fewer items, but machines don’t need health benefits or overtime! All they need are some minor tweaks and repairs.

2. PBX/Phone Operators
Within the past decade, most companies have also turned to using automated telephone operators. The rampant influx of this cost-effective technology makes it difficult to dodge today. Have you called your wireless or cable provider lately? If so, you’ve probably been greeted by a robotic voice reminiscent of Apple’s MacInTalk voice recognition software. These automated machines may not be able to call in sick, but customers are subjected to a hellish, intergalactic labyrinth also known as the directory. You’ll be hard pressed to find a live person on the other end if pressing the number zero doesn’t work.

3. Salespeople
Retail stores are among the industries hit hardest by the recession. While celebrities, designers, and Anna Wintour scrambled to boost sales via Fashion’s Night Out, it didn’t stop retailers from cutting their staff loose or slashing hours and wages mercilessly. Some of us, however, hardly noticed this career genocide thanks to our digital love for online shopping. Why leave the house, miss another television show, or lift another finger when goods can be directly shipped to you?

4. Bank Tellers
ATMs are no surprise today, but how about online banking and mobile apps for smartphones? What can you not do with online banking and an ATM that a teller can do? Not much. With the help of mobile apps, you’ll also be able to deposit checks using your cell phone. Simply take a photo of both sides of the signed check, send it to your bank using the app, and immediately reap the benefits of the newly deposited funds. Yet another small win for technology around the world.

How to Stay Ahead
Unless you’ve already lost your job to technology, there’s no need to sweat bullets—even then, your solution is easy. Focus on how you can embrace technology so you aren’t reliving eerie scenes from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, in which the distinctions between humans and robots are marginal.

Master the art of communication—it’s one way that machines will never be able to compete. Take classes at a local community college to brush up on technical skills—the cost of tuition is generally pretty affordable. For others who can get their employers to sponsor them, three- to five-day classes are available on a variety of topics, ranging from how to master the Microsoft Office Suite to how to understand the fundamentals of Dreamweaver. College students can also prepare for the future by integrating computer classes into their general education, experience that will prove useful to employers upon graduation.

Make Friends Inside and Outside the Office

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 22:12

1.jpg

When we were younger, making friends was easy. School provides us with an instant pool of people our own age that we interact with on a daily basis and who are in the same boat we are. But once we leave college and enter the real world, finding friends can be a more difficult task, especially if you have to relocate for a job.

Whether in or out of the office, you are dealing with a myriad of ages, interests, and personalities. So how do you sift through it all to find true friends? Here are some tips on how to make it happen.

Make Yourself Accessible

At the Office
The workplace can be a hard place to approach people. Cubicles are isolating by nature, which makes it hard to interact with your coworkers. Make an effort to show you’re a friendly person. Decorate your cube. Engage in office banter. Ask coworkers how their weekend was. Any excuse to interact with your colleagues will help show them that you are willing to make the effort to be friends.

Out of the Office
When you aren’t at the office, you don’t have a direct pool of people to interact with. The entire city is a pool of possible friends. The best approach is to simply be approachable. Be friendly. Smile and say hi as people pass. Strike up a conversation in the line at the grocery store or the bank. The friendlier you are, the more people will want to interact with you.

Reach Out of Your Comfort Zone

At the Office
You can’t sit in your little bubble and expect people to approach you. You are going to have to handle some awkward social situations before you can find your work BFF. Take every invite to go out to lunch, even if you’ve brought your own. Attend every work happy hour. If your coworkers want to sing “Love Is a Battlefield” at karaoke, get up on stage with them. You need to show you’re a team player if you want to be included in their reindeer games.

Out of the Office
If you continue to go to the same bars or same places to eat, you are going to keep running into the same people. Branch out. Take a class. Start shopping at a different market. Go to a movie or dinner alone, or grab a drink by yourself. Strike up a conversation with the bartender. If you have social anxiety, and strangers scare you, try starting small, like chatting with the Starbucks barista you see every morning.

Find Common Interest

At the Office
If your office has groups or clubs for employees, it could be the perfect way to meet coworkers with similar interests. Join the company gym. Volunteer for the company’s philanthropy efforts. Or even start your own group at the office. Finding coworkers with similar interests guarantees that you have something to bond over that’s not just work.

Out of the Office
No matter what city you are in, there are people who share your interests. Find the local groups of your interest. Love to bowl? Join a bowling league. Enjoy a good book? Find a book club. Are you an avid runner? Get into a running group. Finding smaller pools of people also allows you to interact with people in a closer, more personal way.

Try Unconventional Methods

At the Office
If you have tried the subtle approach and nothing is happening, try taking charge of the situation. Invite some of your coworkers out for a happy hour. Organize an after-work movie night. Find a good excuse to get some of your coworkers to hang out in a social setting.

Out of the Office
If social settings aren’t working for you, take your search online. Some local sites can offer ways for locals with similar interests to connect. Dating sites can also be an excellent way to make friends. And you could even find a significant other during the process.

Making friends can be a trying experience, but all you need is one new friend to help you branch out and find more. Remember, in general, people are friendly; you just need to make the effort to get to know them.

I knew so well in my own father

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 22:11

Yes?’ I noticed the hint of deep boredom which I knew so well in my own father.

‘Yes? Any particular Venetian painter?’

‘Bellini,’ I answered rather wildly.

‘Yes? Which?’

‘I’m afraid that I didn’t know there were two of them.’ ‘Three to be precise. You will find that in the great ages painting was very much a family business. How did you leave England?’

‘It has been lovely,’ said Sebastian.

‘Was it? Was it? It has been my tragedy that I abominate the English countryside. I suppose it is a disgraceful thing to inherit great responsibilities and to be entirely indifferent to them. I am all the Socialists would have me be, and a great stumbling-block to my own party. Well, my elder son will change all that, I’ve no doubt, if they leave him anything to inherit…Why, I wonder, are Italian sweets always thought to be so good? There was always an Italian pastry-cook at Brideshead until my father’s day.  He had an Austrian, so much better. And now I suppose there is some British matron with beefy forearms.’

He said, "Anyone mention the name of the company they worked for?"

"No. And even if you find the guys who organized the party, I doubt they’ll admit to anything. We’re talking medical school professors and financial types, and this was four years ago."

"Four years ago would be right around the time Lauren was working for Gretchen Stengel. So maybe Gretchen had a party-rental sideline."

"Where is Gretchen?"

Looking back

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 22:10

Looking back, now, after twenty years, there is little I would have left undone or done otherwise. I could match my cousin Jasper’s game-cock maturity with a sturdier fowl. I could tell him that all the wickedness of that time was like the spirit they mix with the pure grape of the Douro, heady stuff full of dark ingredients; it at once enriched and retarded the whole process of adolescence as the spirit checks the fermentation of the wine, renders it undrinkable, so, that it must lie in the dark year in, year out, until it is brought up at last fit for the table. Those weekends, did she usually take her car?"

I could tell him, too, that to know and love one other, human being is the root of all wisdom. But I felt no need for these sophistries as I sat before my cousin, saw him, freed from his inconclusive struggle with Pindar, in his dark grey suit, his white tie, his scholar’s gown; heard his grave tones and, all the time, savoured the gillyflowers in full bloom under my windows. I had my secret and sure defence, like a talisman worn in the bosom, felt for in the moment of danger, found and firmly grasped. So I told him what was not in fact the truth, that I usually had a glass of champagne about that time, and asked him to join me.

On the day after Jasper’s Grand Remonstrance I received another, in different terms and from an unexpected source.
"Yes, always. … So this is different, isn’t it?" He rubbed his armband tattoo, wincing as if the art were new, the pain fresh. "Do you really think something’s wrong?"

"I don’t know enough to think anything. But Mrs. Abbot seems to be worrying."

"Maybe Mrs. A’s getting us all overwrought. The way mothers do."

"Have you met her?"

"Only once, a while backtwo, three months ago. She came to take Lo out to lunch and we chatted briefly while Lo got ready. I thought she was nice enough but rather Pasadena, if you know what I mean. Coordinated ensemble, several cracks past brittle. I saw her as a perfect fiftiespersonsomeone who’d drive a Chrysler Imperial with all the trimmings and pile the backseat full of Bullocks Wilshire shopping bags."

"Conservative," I said.

"Staid," he said. "Theatrically sad. One of those women fighting the future with mascara and matching shoes and tiny sandwiches with the crust trimmed."

"Doesn’t sound like Lauren."

I believe she did say something about it

Tema: Be temos — uggmall @ 22:08

I believe she did say something about it. I forget what. I think she was staying with some Italian cousins of ours, the Foglieres, and Anthony turned up with his family at the hotel, and there was some party the Foglieres gave that they weren’t asked to. I know Mummy said something about it when I told her he was a friend of mine. I can’t think why he should want to go to a party at the Foglieres - the princess is so proud of her English blood that she talks of nothing else. Anyway, no one objected to Antoine - much, I gather. It was his mother they thought difficult.’ ‘And who is the Duchesse of Vincennes?’

‘Poppy?’

‘Stefanie.’

‘You must ask Antoine that. He claims to have had an affair with her.’

‘Did he?’

‘I dare say. I think it’s more or less compulsory at Cannes. Why all this interest?’

‘I just wanted to find out how much truth there was in what Anthony said last night.’

‘I shouldn’t, think a word. That’s his great charm.’

‘You may think it charming. I think it’s devilish. Do you know he spent the whole of yesterday evening trying to turn me against you, and almost succeeded?’ ‘Did he? How silly. Aloysius wouldn’t approve of that at all, would you, you pompous old bear?’

And then Boy Mulcaster came into the room.

Salander had said Lauren was living off investments, and I wondered if her body was the principal. If so, her disappearance could be nothing more than a quarter-break freelance to accrue spare cash.

No car, because she was flyingjetting off somewhere with a sheik or a tycoon or a software emperor, any man sufficiently rich and deluded to fall for the ego sop of purchased pleasure.

Lauren serving as amusement for a few days, returning home nicely invested. But if that was the case, why had she raised her mother’s anxiety by not providing a cover story? And why hadn’t she packed clothing?

Because this particular job required a new wardrobe? Or no clothing at all beyond the threads on her back?

She had taken her purse, meaning she had her credit cards. What did a party girl require other than willingness and magic plastic?

Maybe she was punishing Jane by slipping away without explanation letting Jane know she wouldn’t be controlled.
